Understanding Network Devices

Whenever you open a website, watch a video, or send a message, your data travels through multiple network devices before reaching the internet.

How the Internet Reaches Your Home or Office

Before jumping into devices, let’s see the overall flow.

Internet → Modem → Router → Switch → Your devices (laptop, phone, server)

Each device has one clear responsibility.

What is a Modem?

A modem is the device that connects your local network to the internet. Your ISP (Airtel, Jio, ACT, etc.) sends internet signals through :-

  • Fiber cable

  • Telephone line

These signals are not directly understandable by your computer.

Convert ISP signals into internet data and back again

What is a Router?

Once the internet enters through the modem, it reaches the router.

  • Internet ←> multiple devices

  • One network ←> another network

What does a router actually do?

  • Gives IP addresses to devices

  • Sends data to the correct device

  • Routes traffic between networks

A router is like a traffic police officer:

  • Knows all roads

  • Sends vehicles to the correct destination

  • Prevents confusion and collision

What is a Hub?

A hub sends data to every device connected to it.

  • One device sends data

  • Hub broadcasts it to all

  • Every device checks if it’s for them

What is a Switch?

A switch sends data only to the intended device.

  • Learns MAC addresses

  • Knows exactly where each device is

  • Forwards data smartly

What is a Firewall?

A firewall is responsible for network security. Its’ work is to allow safe traffic and block dangerous traffic.

Firewall checks :-

  • IP addresses

  • Ports

  • Protocols

  • Rules defined by admins

Without firewalls, systems are open to attacks.

What is a Load Balancer?

When one server is not enough, we use multiple servers.

What does it do?

  • Receives all incoming requests

  • Distributes them across servers

  • Prevents overloading

How All These Devices Work Together

Step-by-step flow:

  1. Internet comes from ISP

  2. Modem translates the signal

  3. Router directs traffic

  4. Firewall filters unsafe requests

  5. Load Balancer distributes traffic

  6. Switch connects internal devices

  7. Servers process the request

  8. Response goes back the same way
